Graduate Admission
Before we will decide on your admission, you must send
these materials to us:
- Your $45 application fee
The check for your fee (in U.S. funds) must be drawn on a U.S. bank
and payable to Central Michigan University. You also may make your
payment with one of these credit cards: Visa, MasterCard, Discover
or American Express. This fee is not refundable.
- Official transcripts and proof of your degrees
If you studied or earned degrees in a country where the official
language is not English, official English translations of your
transcripts and proof of your degrees is required. Official
transcripts of all your course work must include the seal of the
university. Please ask your university to send these documents
directly to the College of Graduate Studies.
- Proof of your English language proficiency
If your native language is not English, you must demonstrate your
competency in the language. You may do this in one of these ways:
- Submission of an official TOEFL or MELAB score.
Applicants submitting the following scores may be considered for
regular admission: TOEFL - 550 pbt, 213
cbt or 79 ibt; IELTS - 6.5; MELAB - 80 or higher. Applicants may be
considered for conditional admission with earned scores in the following ranges: TOEFL - 500-547 pbt, 173-210
cbt or 61-78 ibt; IELTS - 5.5 or 6.0. Such students will be required
to take an English placement exam administered by CMU’s English
Language Institute (ELI) upon arrival, and depending upon the
results of the ELI exam, may be allowed to take a restricted number
of courses in their academic disciplines concurrently with the
required ELI courses. Applicants with scores below the minimums in
either the TOEFL, IELTS, or MELAB are not eligible for graduate
admission and may be admitted to the ELI only. Requests to
substitute another test will be evaluated by the dean of the College
of Graduate Studies when necessary.
- Satisfactory completion of a course of study (for example, high
school or baccalaureate degree) at a recognized institution that
uses English as the language of instruction.
- Satisfactory completion (with a GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale) of
at least 12 credit hours of graduate course work at a recognized
institution that uses English as the language of instruction.
- At least two years of professional employment in the United
States in a position that relies on the use of English. You must
supply a statement from your employer that verifies you are
competent in the English language. If you use this method to meet
the requirement, you must take an English placement exam
administered by the English Language Institute (ELI) when you arrive
at CMU. You will take ELI courses, and you may be allowed to take a
restricted number of credits in your academic discipline.
- At least four years of professional employment in a position
that relies on the use of English. You must supply a statement
from the employer that verifies you are competent in the English
language. If you use this method to meet the requirement, you must
take an English placement exam administered by the English Language
Institute (ELI) when you arrive at CMU. You will take ELI courses,
and you may be allowed to take a restricted number of credits in
your academic discipline.
- Financial statement
Complete the financial support form that is part of the graduate
application and provide the supporting documents. The bank statement
must be an original document that is less than 12 months old.
Photocopies are not acceptable. If you have been awarded a
scholarship from your government or another institution, include an
original document confirming the value of the scholarship and all
its conditions.

Your application must include a brief statement describing your
purpose and general plans for graduate study at Central Michigan
