Background
To educate and train responsible global citizens and effective world leaders are part of the international education mission at CMU. The internalization of the curriculum through faculty development and initiatives is a crucial element in progressing toward the stated international education mission. In November 1999, the University made commitment through the Office of International Education (OIE) to support faculty international development and initiatives. The OIE is pleased to invite faculty across disciplines to submit funding proposals.

Proposal Evaluation Guidelines
The evaluation guidelines listed below were developed to emphasize proposals that will enhance the international focus of CMU and yet have the potential to be sustained through regular budget allocations and/or external funding. Several are particularly crucial to the development of the University’s ability to compete internationally. The Proposal Reviewing Committee will give priorities to proposals that have covered the following criteria.
  1. Assist the University in raising its profile regionally, nationally, and globally. What the proposed activity does in building and/or strengthening our international capability at CMU is an important aspect.

  2. Build academic program capacity at different levels. How the proposed activity relates to the University’s international mission and to the priorities set by colleges as well as the departments is considered as an important factor.

  3. Explore exciting new opportunities. The idea of internationalizing the curriculum at CMU is still novel enough to imply that any international activity is, by definition, exciting and new. The acceptance of such an implication, especially as it relates to the allocation of scarce resources, would be an error. Any new initiatives, such as the creation of a new course, program, area studies, etc., should be well grounded and supported by key faculty members.

  4. Have long-term sustained impact on international education at CMU. Proposed activities must go beyond the stages of junkets, one-time conferences for international visitors, and access to resources that may not find their way into course curricula.

  5. Cost effectiveness. The issue of cost-effectiveness is one that includes a consideration of other funding sources requested and their effective use in achieving 3-5 measurable outcomes that have immediate impact on the internationalization of curriculum. In addition, the consideration of a plan or lead for external funding potential is a plus in the evaluation process
