HEALTH INSURANCE INFORMATION
Health
care is very good in the United States, but it is also very
expensive. Staying in the hospital for a single day may cost more
than $500, and this amount does not include the cost of treatment.
To ensure that International students and scholars have adequate
coverage, Central Michigan University requires you to purchase
health insurance during your period of study here. If you plan to
bring your family members, we strongly urge that you obtain
insurance for all of them.
Immigration regulations require that J-1 students and scholars
obtain health insurance for themselves and their dependents. The
health insurance premium (2006-2007) for a single student under the
age of 25 is $1399 for a 12-month period, an additional $3130 per
year for spouse under the age of 25, and $2489 for all children.
Having competent and affordable medical care available for everyone
in your family is a necessity. Please note that no health insurance
policy covers 100% of medical expenses.
If you already have health insurance coverage, submit an English
translation of your insurance policy to OIE, three weeks prior to
the beginning of each semester. If your policy is equal to or better
than the CMU plan, you will not need to enroll in CMU health
insurance.
University Health Services provides health care, health education,
and disease prevention services for CMU students and their spouses.
Physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants provide
services such as physical examinations, diagnosis and treatment of
injuries and illness, sexual and gynecological care, communicable
disease screening, and immunizations. Students receive bills for any
treatment at the University Health Services clinic.
